Art As Catharsis and WherePostRockDwells are proud to announce the release of The State of Trans-Tasman Post Rock – a compilation featuring some of the finest post-rock acts that Australia and New Zealand has to offer.

Australia’s post-rock scene is rife with weavers of cinematic soundscapes, meditative flows and stampeding riff work. However, while the quality of these bands is unquestionable, accessibility remains a struggle during a global pandemic where live music and festival appearances have been driven to a grinding halt.

This compilation is aimed at giving people new artists to love and engage with through Bandcamp. It’s filled to the brim with some of the region’s finest - scene heavyweights and lesser-known maestros alike.

“We've worked with WherePostRockDwells to pull together a compilation of our favourite post-rock bands from Australia and New Zealand,“ begins Art As Catharsis label head Lachlan Dale. “Some of these names will be familiar to post-rock fans, but we've tried to create a blend of more recognisable names, up and coming acts, and underground gems.”

“As a genre, post-rock has the potential to tell complex narratives and create nuanced emotional experiences. Take We Lost The Sea's Departure Songs, which celebrates people who sacrificed their lives for the sake of human progress - stories of ambition, loss and despair.”

“Art As Catharsis very consciously supports forward-thinking, cinematic instrumental music," continues Dale. "We want to open up the space for musicians to experiment with new textures, new concepts and new methods. We want to push back against narrow conceptions of what music can or should be.”

For those who like their music long, meditative and nuanced: this compilation is for you. Not only will newcomers find a gateway into the countless back-catalogues of each of these excellent bands, there’s also a hint of excitement for those thinking forward too.

Anyone eager to sink their teeth into more post-rock can take pleasure in the news that Art As Catharsis is teasing new releases from Hashshashin, Desbot and Joseph Rabjohns in the year to come. As for now, sit tight and allow the compilation to take you through space, texture and flow as you tour weightlessly through the aether and depth of trans-Tasman post-rock.

I like the stylistic dialogue between this and Yamadori, which appear to me as an expansive study on contrasts, while Years Under Glass is like a subtle, nuanced etching examining harmony and balance, denser and more spiritually distinctive, and the album artwork captures that aptly. It's amazing how it plays with genre tropes, with an amount of this spontaneous, intuitive dynamics and rhythmic power most of the bands don't possess. Thank you for your art guys!
